Over the years, the company has received considerable critical acclaim and numerous theater and literary awards and nominations, including Obie, AUDELCO, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel , Drama League and Drama Desk Awards.The Fourth Wall, All in the Timing, The Old Settler , Missing/Kissing, The Model Apartment, Scotland Road, You Should Be So Lucky, The Stendhal Syndrome, Sabina, Dividing the Estate and In The Continuum are among the many plays brought to national attention by Primary Stages. In 2004, Primary Stages moved from its 99-seat home of 17 years on West 45th Street to the 199-seat theater at 59E59 Theaters. This new theater has increased Primary Stages profile in New York City while boosting our reputation as one of the premiere theaters for the development of new work. This move has marked a period of unprecedented growth for the company and has created tremendous opportunities for expanding our audience and funding bases, establishing a new cultural venue on the Upper East Side, and securing our future in the New York theatrical landscape.
The Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group Now in its 13th year, this program brings together a select group of writers each season that meet weekly to share and receive constructive feedback on the development of their new work. Since its inception, over 45 full-length plays have been written, many of which have been produced by prominent theaters including Cherry Lane Theater, Long Wharf, The New Group, NY Stage and Film, South Coast Rep, and of course, Primary Stages. Our career development programs are generously supported by Edward John Noble Foundation. Fellow and Interns form a core of support in all areas of Primary Stages operations, gaining experience in the department of their chosen internship and recieve a modest weekly stipend during the term of their work (see below). Our programs offers the opportunity to work along side dedicated artists and managers at one of New York City's pre-eminent Off Broadway theatres. Our goal at Primary Stages is to have Fellows and Interns learn a practical skill set, while developing realtionships with artists and administrators in the New York City and National theater communites. Programs are offered in the following departments: Development (Fellowship and Internships offered)– participants have the opportunity to learn about the fundraising process including prospect identification and research, donor cultivation, proposal writing and stewardship. Tasks include reviewing daily and weekly publications for prospects, providing ticketing assistance to patrons, writing acknowledgement letters, assisting with event planning and specific projects as they arise. Interns will act as members of the Development Team, attending weekly staff and departmental meetings. Candidates must have a sincere interest in theater fundraising. Marketing (Fellowship and Internships offered )– working closely with the marketing department in both daily administrative operations and long term projects, we provide a multifaceted learning experience in the field of professional theatrical marketing. Participants will assist the department with mailings, research, outreach, special events, audience development, archiving, and various forms of internet marketing and strategizing. General Management (Fellowship and Internships offered)– participants will work closely with Managing Director and Business Manager on all day to day issues relating to operations of the organization including artist’s contracts, budgeting, accounting, and special projects. Work will also involve interaction with all other departments of the organization. Artistic*** (Fellowship and Internships offered) – assist the Artistic department with projects such as in house readings, casting, production needs, and correspondence with artists. Attend readings at other companies, as well as productions in New York City. Observe sessions of the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer’s Group, Primary Stages group of emerging playwrights who meet weekly to create original plays. Literary***(Fellowship and Internships offered)– assist Literary Manager with management of script submissions including correspondence with playwrights and agents, database management, and daily organizational process. Responsibilities also include working closely with the Literary Manager on the operations of the Primary Stages School of Theatre. Production Management(Internships Only)– assist the Production Supervisor with scheduling, production operations, and facility maintenance. Must be available during load in, tech and previews. Production Management Interns attend production meetings, communicate with designers and crew, and work closely to support the needs of a given production. Production Assistant(Internships Only) – work directly with Stage Management in rehearsals and on production run crews. Production Assistants are responsible for attending all rehearsals, tech, and performances on a given show. Previous backstage theater experience is requisite. ***Please note that Artistic, and Literary positions are already filled for the Spring 2009 semester. Candidate Requirements and Benefits All candidates must be well-organized, proactive, detail-oriented, posses strong communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal), be able to prioritize and multi-task. Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, & Outlook) is important. Must have a strong interest in the not-for-profit arts. Fellowship candidates must commit a minimum of 30 hours weekly. Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or be currently enrolled in a post graduate education program and be available for a minimum of three days weekly during their fellowship. Degree credit may be arranged for a Fellowship at Primary Stages. Internship candidates must commit a minimum of 20 hours weekly during their internship and should demonstrate a strong interest in non profit theater within the department of their choosing. Degree credit may be arranged for Internships at Primary Stages. Stipends Fellows receive a weekly stipend of $200 during the term of their fellowship.
