Dialects 1

Instructor: Jane Guyer Fujita

(Acting Lecturer, Yale School of Drama)

Dialect and accent are defining qualities, infusing your character with an indication of geography, time period, socio-economic background, culture, and individual personality. Actors often take shortcuts to quickly imitate a dialect in an audition situation, but the key to mastering any dialect is to teach yourself by analyzing the sounds of speech. This 6-week class will teach you the International Phonetic Alphabet and examine the vocal posture, rhythm, music, lilt, and physicality inherent to various regions. You will apply these observational skills to learning British RP, allowing you to begin developing a character through the performance of text.
