Rock and Pop Performance

Instructor: Tim Weil

(Musical Director, Original Broadway Production of RENT)

This is a 1-night intensive workshop in Rock/Pop, a performance-driven genre rife with opportunity for personalization. Taught by the original Musical Director of RENT, Tim Weil, the class will begin with a music rehearsal for “Seasons of Love”, allowing you to delve into this style of music with your fellow students while familiarizing yourself with Tim’s direction.  Each student will bring a pop/rock piece to work on in class, exploring the best vocal techniques and musical choices for you within this genre. You will look for opportunities to make this song your own and find the confidence to bring it to auditions.

Don’t feel restrained by 16 bar cuts; instead, bring as much of a song as you need to take hold of the piece. You will have the option of altering the key and experimenting with various stylistic choices. While conquering the musical challenges of this genre, you will be liberated to take risks and make bold choices as an actor through song.

Student must bring in a genuine rock or pop song—no musical theater!
