Voice and Breath 1

Instructor: Jane Guyer Fujita

(Acting Lecturer, Yale School of Drama)

Your voice is not only a powerful tool for communication, but also an identifying quality that influences every character you play. It is essential for an actor to understand the proper use of his or her voice in order to keep it healthy, resilient, and powerful. This 10-week class will provide a workout of your vocal instrument, granting you full access to your body, breath, and vocal capacity using a series of exercises based on Fitzmaurice Voicework®. The first half of the class will cover body awareness, breath, heightening your senses, and releasing tension to open you up to spontaneity and truth. The second half will focus on breath support, pitch, rate, volume, and resonance. As you become comfortable with these concepts, you will apply your new skills to text, allowing them to inform and support a character.
