Online CLASS:

TOOLS for Effective Playwriting Submissions

The submission process is a required (and sometimes dreaded) aspect of most playwright development and industry opportunities. This 8-week class will help you conquer the overwhelming task of submitting your work.

This class might be for you if you:

  • Are an emerging playwright with at least 2-3 plays you are ready to begin submitting for opportunities.

  • Have plans to submit your work to specific upcoming opportunities.

  • Have submission experience, but want to refine your applications and maximize your impact.

  • Writers must have at least 2-3 completed, submission-ready plays in order to take this class. This class will focus on submissions for development and industry opportunities, and will not cover cold submissions to theaters, producers, or directors for production.

In this class you will:

  • Learn best practices about when to submit, what to submit, and tools for how to submit.

  • Look at samples of personal statements, project proposals, CVs, and more to understand what does and doesn’t work in applications.

  • Be assigned sample submission questions and bring in your responses for discussion.

  • Bring in your own application materials to discuss in class, led by Matthew, in order to refine your materials and make them as effective as possible.

  • If you're looking at specific submission opportunities, bring in these submission requirements to strategize your approach.

By the end of this class you will have:

  • A better sense of what theaters and organizations are asking for in their submission processes.

  • The ability to personalize your submission materials for any opportunity.

  • Tools and strategies that you can apply to future submissions to increase your effectiveness and specificity.
