Michael McKeever (playwright)

Michael McKeever has written twenty-six full length plays that have been produced at theaters across the United States and Canada, including Penguin Rep, Marin Theatre Company, New Conservatory Theater Center, Phoenix Theatre, Stage West, Island City Stage, 1st Stage, Buffalo United Artists, Palm Beach Dramaworks, Actors’ Playhouse, New Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, and Florida Stage. His plays have also received productions in some of the most prestigious theaters in Europe, among them Komödie Dresden (Dresden, Germany), Och-Teatr (Warsaw, Poland), and Theater in der Josefstadt, Kammerspiele (Vienna, Austria). His plays include After, Clark Gable Slept Here, South Beach Babylon, 37 Postcards, Stuff, Suite Surrender, Charlie Cox Runs with Scissors, and Melt. Upcoming productions include the world premiere of Finding Mona Lisa at Actors’ Playhouse in Miami this summer, and the world premiere of Mr. Parker at Island City Stage in Fort Lauderdale next spring.

McKeever’s work has been nominated four times for the Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award. He is a three-time finalist for Humana Festival’s Heideman Award and an NEA Residency Grant recipient. He has won numerous Carbonell and Silver Palm Awards, and has received three Florida Individual Artist Fellowships. In addition to writing, McKeever conducts seminars in playwriting at several Florida colleges and universities.

As an actor, he has appeared on regional stages in Mothers and Sons, The Normal Heart, It’s Only a Play, The Pride, The SantaLand Diaries, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Picnic, and Dan Clancy’s The Timekeepers, for which he received the Carbonell Award for Best Actor in a Play. He is also an award-winning designer and illustrator.

McKeever and his partner, Stuart Meltzer, are co-founders of Zoetic Stage, a Miami-based theater company dedicated to developing new work and bringing different and exciting points of view to established plays. Since its inception, the company has won numerous honors and citations, and has become a leading force in the region’s artistic landscape. Several plays developed at Zoetic Stage have gone on to receive celebrated productions around the world.

McKeever is the Florida East Coast Representative for the Dramatists Guild of America and a proud member of Actors’ Equity. This summer, after thirteen years together, he will marry his partner in a villa overlooking the Amalfi Coast, surrounded by a handful of family, friends, and his fabulous agent Barbara Hogenson.
